Chen's* story

“Over time, I’ve realised that my confidence has quietly grown without me even noticing. Volunteering has provided me with invaluable experience and has helped me navigate the challenges of finding work in Scotland.”

First and foremost, I express my sincere gratitude to the Bridges Programmes for arranging my volunteer work at a school.

This opportunity has been invaluable in helping me understand and integrate into the Scottish Education System, while also boosting my confidence in returning to the education sector.

Having worked in education in Hong Kong, I’m well aware of the significant differences between Hong Kong and Scotland’s education systems and cultures.

As a new immigrant, re-entering the education field in Scotland has been full of challenges. My teaching qualifications from Hong Kong are not recognised here, and the language barrier with English has been another hurdle. I always struggle to express myself or fully understand what’s being said.

However, the teachers and students have shown immense patience, always willing to slow down and explain things clearly, and I have truly felt their kindness.

The biggest challenge has been adapting to the local workplace culture. Through my volunteer work, I’ve had the opportunity to observe how teachers guide students and manage classroom dynamics, which has helped me align my actions and become a better team member.

While my conversations with colleagues are often limited due to my average English skills, I make every effort to listen attentively, Even if I only understand 10% of the conversation. I’m eager to try.
